The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has said that it will pressurise the government and the Maoists to create conducive environment for all Maoist victims to return to their villages.
During a meeting with the representatives of Nepal Maoist Victims Association (NMVA), who went to the NHRC to padlock its office to protest it’s ‘indifference’ towards the government suppression in their protest programme, NHRC office-bearers agreed to ask the government not to use force in protest programmes of NMVA and monitor the rights violations in their peaceful protest.

Talking to Nepalnews, communication officer of the NHRC, Bimal Babu Khatri, said the NHRC would pressurise the Maoists to respect people’s right to live peaceful life and return to their village. He said the government would be cautioned not to curtail their rights of carry out peaceful protests.

The NMVA is organizing protest programmes to pressurise the government to fulfil their 10-point demands.

The Maoist victims also complained that there is not conducive environment for them to return to the village even after various agreements between the ruling seven party alliance and the Maoists and asked the government to provide compensation to them.

Representatives of NMVA also apprised the NHRC about the hardships facing the Maoist victims.

According to NMVA, of the 5,000 displaced families living in Kathmandu, only 2,000 were able to return to their villages following the announcement of ceasefire from the Maoist to hold talks with the government.
