The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has plans to visit Jajarkot where the army launched massive air bombings on Tuesday, the Himalayan Times quoted NHRC member Sushil Pyakurel, as saying, on Thursday.
“We will visit the site of attack to monitor the situation there and to study whether the security forces’ attack was in line with the norms of the Geneva Convention,” the daily quoted Pyakurel, as saying.
“There may have been civilian casualties in the incident since the chances of civilians getting targeted in aerial attacks are quite high,” he said.
According to latest radio reports, one individual was killed and two more were injured in the bombarding. Earlier reports, quoting security sources said, more than 40 people, including Maoist ideologue Dr. Baburam Bhattarai might have died in the incident.
The air raid in the western district of Jajarkot targeted a public program of the Maoists in Thapachaur village. Apart from the Maoists themselves, the program was participated in by dozens of human rights activists, journalists and civilians, according to reports.
