Nobel Academy, Kathmandu, edged out Government Model High School, Chandigarh, by 7-6 in the penalty shootout in the final match of the under-17 Subroto Cup football tournament in New Delhi, India, on Thursday.
The tiebreaker was applied to decide the match as a 1-1 deadlock could not end after 90-minute regular time and the 30-minute extra time, news reports said.
The Chandigarh team made the breakthrough with Sukhdeep Singh converting a spot kick into a goal early in the first half while Nobel Academy bounced back in the early second half with Anil Lama scoring a goal.
Chandigarh goalkeeper Prabhjot Singh saved several attacks from the Nepali strikers in the second half.
Tiebreaker was applied after both teams failed to score any goal to secure a win.
Delighted by the win, Nepali team coach Raju Shakya, told reporters after the match, “We deserved to win the match, especially after our dominance in the second half.”
“Their defence did a great job especially in the second half,” Shakya commented.
Altogether 38 school teams from India, Nepal and Bangladesh took part in the tournament.
