The US State Department published a report on 13th June claiming that political instability and the Maoist insurgency have prevented Nepal’s efforts in checking girl trafficking.
According to the report, girls and women of Nepal are usually trafficked to India, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. The report added that although Nepal’s policy for eliminating trafficking doesn’t even meet the minimum standards, there have been significant efforts in improving the policy.
The report reflects the growing concern of the American people and the US government over the implications of girl trafficking including issues of rights, health and security.
The fourth annual ‘Trafficking in Persons’ report released by Secretary of State Colin Powell also mentioned that internal trafficking, not only for sexual exploitation but also for forced labor, is widespread in Nepal.
