Nepal calls upon intellectuals for contribution

Kathmandu, June 10: CPN-UML general secretary and leader of the main opposition party Madhav Kumar Nepal, inaugurating the fourth national general convention of the Nepal Intellectuals Council, pointed out the need for the intellectuals to make contributions from their respective positions to move ahead Marxism in line with the demand of the time and the situation.

Mr Nepal expressed the view that narrow-mindedness has been a hindrance to the leftist movement.

MP Chitra Bahadur K.C. said that the leftist leaders should study history to achieve the final goal with correct analysis and move forward.

Speaking from the chair, MP Dr. Mangal Siddhi Manandhar said that the intellectuals should undertake deep study of the current subjects such as liberalisation, globalisation, privatisation and information technology.

CPN-UML standing committee member and head of the Department of Intellectuals and Foreign Affairs Jhalanath Khanal said that the main objective of the progressive people was to eliminate semi-feudal and semi-colonial system and set up people’s system and for this purpose, the intellectuals should unite.

President of Samyukta Janamorcha Amik Sherchan said that as there appears to be division due to deviation in the ideological perception of the leftists, the intellectuals should alert the parties in this regard and the leftists and intellectuals associated with them are also responsible to some extend in the increase of distortions in the country.

CPN-United general secretary Bishnu Bahadur Manandhar said it was unfortunate that big parties were seeking to make the academic forum such as intellectuals their affiliated organisation.

President of Nepal National Intellectuals Council Ramesh Kumar Sharma, president of All-Nepal Intellectuals Association Dr. Om Gurung, president of Nepal National Teachers Organisation Madhav Adhikari, president of Progressive Teachers Organisation Chiranjibi Sharma and president of Professionals Federation of Nepal Prof. Harkha Narayan Dhaubadel also expressed their views on the occasion.

Delegates from 60 districts are attending the two-day general convention.

Meanwhile, in Birgunj, leader of the main opposition party and CPN-UML general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal has said that the entire Nepalese community should work towards wiping out social anomalies in order to uplift the Dalit community.

Inaugurating the fourth national council meeting of Society for the Liberation of Downtrodden Communities Nepal here today, Mr Nepal said even though the constitution and existing law has made discrimination and untouchability punishable, a change in attitude is yet to come.

Central president of the society Chabbilal Biswokarma presided.

Altogether 175 persons from various parts of the country are taking part in the two-day council meeting.
