Speaker Subash Nembang has said Nepal is committed to safeguarding the interests of various ethnic and indigenous people, and to promote their progress by ensuring inclusive democracy, peace, rule of law and fundamental freedoms.

Addressing the 60th session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues on Friday at the United Nations Headquarters, New York, Nemwang said the resolution of a decade long conflict in Nepal provides greater space for every community to raise their voices.

He said discussions were on between the government and different indigenous groups for safeguarding their interests in the ongoing political and constitutional process.

Nemwang stated that Nepal is heading towards conducting the election to Constituent Assembly so that interests and aspirations, including all of the indigenous groups could be equally and equitably represented. He also lauded the role of the Forum in raising awareness and protecting the rights and promoting the development of ethnic and indigenous communities worldwide.

Meanwhile, the Speaker met with Lynn Pascoe, Under Secretary General of the Department of Political Affairs of the UN at the UN Headquarters Friday. During the meeting, the progress in Nepal’s peace process including the role of the UN was discussed.
