Parliamentarians affiliated with the Nepali Congress (Democratic) have pressurized party president Sher Bahadur Deuba to make the party stance on monarchy clear before the election of the constituent assembly.

Speaking at the NC (D) Parliamentary Party meeting on Saturday, the parliamentarians said the party will suffer a lot if it delays making its position clear on a core political issue that is likely to see rapid polarization of parties that are republican and ceremonial-monarchist.

The members welcomed the eight-point agreement signed between the government and the Maoists on Friday.

“The declaration alone is not enough to make the people sovereign unless the bases for its sustainability are drawn up and the roots of regression are cut,” said Bal Bahadur KC, a central committee member of the party and a parliamentarian.

Most of the parliamentarians stressed the need for continuity of the House until it is replaced by another elected authority.

At the meeting, party leader Deuba and member of the government talks team and Minister of State for Labour and Transport Management, Ramesh Lekhak, briefed the meeting about the talks held between the government and the CPN-Maoist.

According to party sources, serious discussions were held in the meeting on topics like the Government-Maoist cease-fire, effective implementation of the code of conduct, returning the property and assets of the politicians and the general public seized by the Maoists, the issue of management of the army and the arms of both sides and the dissolution of the Parliament, according to the party.
