Kathmandu, June 27: The Nepali Congress Central Working Committee meeting today discussed the theoretical aspects of the government’s budget for the new fiscal year beginning mid-July. The meeting also discussed as to how the budget could be implemented effectively.
The meeting ended discussions on the different aspects of the budget, according to NC Spokesman Narahari Acharya. “The meeting discussed the theoretical aspects of the budget, the provisions for revenues collection and distribution of the government resources for the next fiscal year,” Acharya said. He said the decisions of today’s meeting would be made public only after the next meeting.
Acharya said former Prime Minister Krishna Prasad Bhattarai, Party General Secretary Sushil Koirala, former Finance Minister Dr Ram Sharan Mahat, Home Minister Govinda Raj Joshi, Central Working Committee members Sunil Bhandari, Bal Bahadur Rai and Chandra Singh Bhattarai expressed their views in the meeting.
The speakers said the volume of the budget had been increased and there was disparity in the way the state resources had been set aside for different districts. The meeting also discussed ways to make the party’s role more effective in the implementation of the budget.
Bhattarai said it would be nice if the economic growth rate reached seven per cent during the upcoming fiscal year. “Bhattarai alerted the government against copying the western models ditto while pushing the economic reforms,” Acharya said.
Finance Minister Mahesh Acharya said the disparity was evident because of the long-standing projects and because they were in particular districts. Basically, the government is not bias for or against any district, he said.
The government has set aside adequate budget for the districts that have been affected by the Maoists, Acharya said. The meeting has also stressed that those in the government or outside should make public their opinion keeping in mind the economic policy the party has embraced.
The CWC is meeting tomorrow morning at 7.30. Tomorrow’s meeting is expected to discuss a report on the party’s activities and the upcoming general convention to be held in Pokhara. Central committee members Shailaja Acharya, Bijaya Gachhchadar and Laxman Ghimire were not present in today’s meeting.
