Nepali Congress leader Narahari Acharya today said he would fight for the party presidency as the present leadership under Girija Prasad Koirala has failed to maintain clear and firm ideology in favour of ‘total democracy’.

Acharya, one of the die-hard pro-democracy leaders within the NC, whom party president Koirala unceremoniously alleged of being a royalist recently, told reporters in Pokhara that he was hoping for support from the party ranks for his candidacy for NC presidency. “All the party leadership wants is status quo. Now the must stop looking at constitutional monarchy as a secular entity,” Acahrya said.
The NC leader was of the view that the Congress party was unlikely to move towards a positive direction by lapping up ‘dynastic leadership’ and added that the ongoing movement of the seven parties was nothing but customary protest meetings. To achieve the goal of restoring democracy, clear ideological stand is a must, he said.
The NC is set to hold its 11th General Convention from August 30 to September 4 in Kathmandu.
Party president Koirala accused Acharya and former Nepal Students Union (NSU) general secretary Gagan Thapa to be ‘royalists’ and went on to say that the party was not ready to go for democratic republic vehemently advocated by them.
Acharya and Thapa have already challenged Koirala to justify the allegation.
