Members of Parliament (MPs) have criticized top leaders of the ruling Seven Party Alliance (SPA) of submitting to Maoist demand of dissolving the House of Representatives without taking the House into confidence.

Speaking in the House on Sunday taking “special time,” MPs affiliated to Nepali Congress, CPN (UML), among others, came down heavily upon the SPA leadership and said they had no right to sign on the dissolution of the parliament that was reinstated after the people’s movement 2006.

Top leadership of the SPA and Maoist chairman, Prachanda, signed on an eight-point agreement at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Kathmandu last month agreeing to dissolve the House of Representatives “after an alternative arrangement is made.” They did not explain what that arrangement could be.

Former Prime Minister and president of Rastriya Jana Shakti Party, Surya Bahadur Thapa, said the “eight parties” did not have any right to agree to dissolve the “sovereign” House. He challenged the SPA leaders to stand before people and clarify their decision.

Members of the House also criticized activities like extortion and threat being continued allegedly by the Maoist rebels. Some members even criticized Home Minister Krishna Prasad Sitaula saying that he was working as if he was “minister-in-waiting” for Maoist supremo Pushpa Kamal Dahal.

Making a statement of public importance, Home Minister Sitaula alleged that the Maoists were continuing such activities by violating the code of conduct and called upon them to stop such activities immediately. He also urged them to help in rehabilitating people who had been displaced due to the decade-old Maoist insurgency.

The House resumed its proceedings on Sunday after a recess of 17 days. Speaker Subash Chandra Nemwang presided over the session.
