Mahendra Police Club (MPC) put themselves in the drivers seat for the championship by beating Manang Marshyangdi Club (MMC) 2-1 in the on-going ANFA Martyrs’ Memorial “A” Division League football match played today at the Dashrath Stadium.

The police team came from behind to seal the match and grab the important three points to get to the top of the table.

MMC scored first through the new Nigerian signing Imoh Daniel Ekong, who netted an easy goal off Basanta’s cross. MMC went into the break with a 1-0 lead.

After the re-start, MPC showed their real strength minus their regular skipper Hari Khadka and Rakesh Shrestha due to injury. Raju Katuwal, who broke his leg a year ago while colliding with Santosh Basnet of Jawalakhel (now in Sankata), scored an easy goal through a header in the 55th minute before being replaced by Arjun Rijal. Care-taker skipper Ramesh Budhathoki then struck a beautiful goal in the 63rd minute from the right flank completing fooling MMC goalie Bikash Malla.

The match went quite tense then onwards, but MPC prevailed to ensure a hard-fought victory over their arch-rivals.

Mahendra Police Club jumped to the top with 33 points, ahead of MMC with 32 points and defending champions Nabil Three Star Club at 31.

“The win was first for MPC in the league history against MMC,” MPC coach Yogambar Suwal said. “We are happy with the results as my boys turned a 0-1 deficit into a 2-1 victory.”
