Moriarty urges PM not to form interim govt before arms mngt

American Ambassador to Nepal James F Moriarty has urged Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala not to form interim government until the process of arms management is completed.

During his meeting with PM Koirala at the latter’s residence in Baluwatar Wednesday morning, the US ambassador also urged Koirala not to induct Maoists in the interim cabinet before their weapons are fully locked up.

According to reports, the two also discussed the current political situation of Nepal.

Moriarty informed Koirala that his country had welcomed the promulgation of interim constitution and formation of interim legislature.

He also called for credible and transparent method for arms management.

The US Embassy in a statement yesterday welcomed the promulgation of interim constitution and formation of interim legislative parliament, asking the Maoists to use the opportunity to abandon the tactics of violence.

The US has been saying that it will not remove Maoists from its terror list until they completely renounce violence. The US has also said it will not provide assistance to the ministries led by Maoists in the interim government.
