Members of the National Assembly have submitted a memorandum to the Prime Ministers’ Office (PMO) demanding to summon the meeting of the National Assembly.
14 members of the National Assembly on Sunday submitted the memorandum to summon the session of the upper house as per the commitment expressed during popular movement of the country and as per people’s aspiration expressed during the movement.
Stating that the demand of reinstating parliament was not complete while holding the meeting of the House of Representatives, they said that there was no hurdle to call the meeting of the National Assembly.
Of the total 60 members of the upper house, the tenure of 18 members is yet to complete.
Talking to Nepalnews, one of the members of the National Assembly, Bir Bahadur Singh, informed that they were compelled to move to the PMO as the House of Representatives and the government neglected the role of upper house, which is a permanent body as per the constitution of Nepal 1990.
He informed that they have been demanding to activate the upper house since the dissolution of the parliament back in 2002, adding even after the restoration of democracy, the government had not listened to their voices.
Singh added that though they had played important role during the pro-democracy movement of the country, the reinstated house of representatives and the government did not evaluate their contribution.
Singh, who represents CPN-UML in the upper house said that his party also neglected their calls and delaying to address their issues.
At present there are 7 members each from the CPN-UML and Nepali Congress, three nominated members and one member from the Rastriya Prajatantra Party in the National Assembly.
Singh alleged that the negligence of the political parties to the Upper House is against the sprit of the popular movement of the country.
