Maoist leadership has assured that its proposed mass meeting in Kathmandu on September 21 would be peaceful. In a statement issued Tuesday evening, chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) Prachanda said that the meeting would be completely peaceful.

Prachanda’s statement came following government’s repeated call for cancellation of the mass meeting. The government has feared an armed parade and violent incidents during the mass meeting. The Prime Minister even warned that the peace talks already initiated between the

government and Maoists may break down if Maoist hold the mass meeting in Kathmandu and continue their activities.

The government has accused Maoists of resorting to extortion, forcibly collecting donation and threat. Home Minister Khum Bahadur Khadka said that the government has made necessary arrangements for maintaining security and will thwart any kind of possible violent activities of Maoists.
