As the debate on the future of the monarchy is ongoing, one of the senior leasers of Nepali Congress has revealed that the Maoists had proposed to Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala to be the nation’s first-ever President.

Speaking at a press meet organised by the Chitwan chapter of Nepal Press Union in Chitwan on Thursday, NC leader Narhari Acharya said, “The Nepali Congress should lead the political forces in order to establish a republican Nepal, as the Maoists have already proposed to PM GP Koirala to be the President.”
Stating that King is no longer a political force, Acharya said there was no need for giving space to the King, according to reports.
He termed the comment of Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala on ceremonial kingship as his personal opinion.
Acharya, who is in the campaign for democratic republican Nepal also said that the government has not been able to work at the pace required to conduct constituent assembly elections.
