Notwithstanding the 12-point agreement reached between the alliance of seven agitating political parties and the Maoists, Maoist cadres at Melauli village of Baitadi district misbehaved with Nepali Congress (NC) leaders and members, reports said.

Congress leaders returned to the district headquarter without holding the scheduled function after Maoists took them under control and barred them from organizing a program in the village.

Maoist rebels on Tuesday evening held the central members of NC Binaydhwoz Chand and Sunil Kumar Bhandari, district chairman Narendra Bista and several other leaders who had reached the village for ‘people awareness campaign’.

According to NC leaders, they were further mistreated by the rebels after they refused to hold a joint mass meeting with the Maoists.

Following the congress leaders’ stance, Maoists threatened that the ‘locals would protest’ if the program was held by NC alone. Cadres of Maoist affiliated All Nepal National Independent Student Union Revolutionary (ANNISU-R) chanted slogans against Chand demanding a joint program.

This is the first time the Maoists created obstacle to the programme after they reached the pact with the seven political parties. Maoists and seven political parties had reached an agreement to restore total democracy in the country.
