Maoists students Wednesday called off a threatened indefinite nationwide strike to press for what they call reforms in the education sector to “create an atmosphere” to discuss the “main problems'” facing the nation, the students said in a statement.

The students were referring to last week’s cease-fire between the government and rebels to negotiate a peace to end a bloody seven-year communist insurgency. The students were previously adamant they would go ahead with the strike despite the ceasefire.

UNICEF Executive Director Carol Bellamy Tuesday said educational institutions should be “zones of peace” free of strikes and politics.
