In yet another incident of violation of the 25-point code of conduct signed and agreements reached between the ruling seven party alliance and Maoists, a villager, held captive by Maoists, was found dead in Ilam, a newspaper report said on Sunday.
Maoists claimed that the person, Ash Bahadur from Ibhang village development committee in the district, sneaked out of captivity and “committed suicide”.
A police team led by a police Inspector Govinda Basnet reached the site after the Maoists asked the District Police Office to initiate necessary investigations, reports The Kathmandu Post daily.
However, the deceased’s relatives have refused to take the body. Inconsolable, they say that Maoists took him on July 24 saying that he would be released “in a few days”, the paper added.
Maoist area secretary Sonam informed police about the matter. Rights workers as well as journalists have reached the site along with the police team.
Ash Bahadur is survived by his wife and seven children. His family refused to take the body till late Saturday.
On June 27, the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Nepal had said that Maoists were responsible for the deaths of nine people in the first two months of ceasefire.
