Kathmandu, June 21: Maiya Devi Shrestha of the ruling Nepali Congress has been elected unopposed to the woman’s seat in the National Assembly representing the House of Representatives Wednesday, election officials said. Sixteen seats in the 60 member Assembly are up for grabs and four others are to be nominated  by King Gyanendra.

Elections are being held on
Wednesday or three days after the parliament meets for its budget session Monday. Altogether 13 persons have filed nominations for 11 National Assembly seats; five others are being elected from the five development zones.

The main opposition in parliament, the Unified Marxist Leninist (UML) is expected to gain a majority in the upper chamber after the vote compounding the problems of the ruling Nepali Congress party to get legislation approved by both houses of parliament. The Nepali Congress has a comfortable majority in the House of Representatives.
