Communication minister and government spokesperson Krishna Bahadur Mahara today defended the activities of the Maoist-aligned Young Communist League (YCL), saying that there is nothing unusual about YCL activities in the current transition period.
Speaking at a programme in Butwal, Mahara said the kind of activities the YCL has been carrying out cannot be ruled out in the transition period. The YCL has also done praiseworthy job, which must be recognised, he said.
Mahara’s reaction came at a time when the seven ruling allies have stepped up pressure on the Maoist leadership to stop the forceful activities of the YCL.
The YCL, which comprises a sizable number of former combatants, has come under fire for attacking police posts and government offices in recent days. The League is also accused of acting as a parallel law enforcement agency.
