Lawmakers draw govt attention to current issues

Kathmandu, May 23: Chief whip of the CPN-UML Bharat Mohan Adhikari said at the start of the House of representatives meeting today that the people of Urlabari who had been staging a sit in to press for control of the Mawakhola stream had been beaten up by police, locked up, deprived of food and subjected to torture, adding that as the Mawakhola had become a problem for those people, it should be brought under control and those held released immediately.

Arjun Prasad Joshi of Nepali Congress drew attention to the flooding that took place at the Parbat district headquarters on May l2 and caused much damage, pointing out that government offices, private houses and a drinking water project had been affected.

Asta Laxmi Shakya of CPN UML drew attention to the sorry state of urban roads in the capital of the country.

Jaganath Khatiwada of the same party complained that proper attention had not been paid to the deplorable condition of people in 29 VDCs of Udayapur affected by flooding and landslides last year although the attention of the Prime Minister, Ministers and bodies concerned had been drawn from time to time.

Dr Gopal Koirala of Nepali Congress said flooding has been causing much havoc in Jhapa Constituency No 6 every year and if embankments are not built there some 400 to 500 families will be affected.

Chandra Bahadur Shahi of CPN-UML said that the people of Mugu district who were struggling for lack of food have had to put up with hailstorm on May l0 and ll which destroyed the summer and winter crops and affected sheep.

Netralal Shrestha of RPP said the local administration had removed huts erected in Gajanar VDC of Banke district by people from Rukum, Rolpa, Salyan and Jajarkot who had come there as internal refugees and called for arrangements to accommodate them.

Rajendra Kharel of Nepali Congress called for speedy construction of a bridge over the Sunkoshi River to facilitate movement to and from l7 VDCs on the other side who have been affected by the Maoist insurgency.

Nara Bahadur Hamal of CNP-UML said the hailstorm on April l8 and l9 had destroyed the wheat and barley crops in Dailekh and called for relief measures for those affected.
