Rastriya Prajatanra Party (RPP) and Nepal Sadbhavana Party (NSP) disrupted the proceedings of the House of Representatives, Lower House of parliament, Sunday protesting against the decision of the government to impose new ceiling on land.

Lawmakers of RPP and NSP demanded that ceiling be imposed on all property not on land alone. They also demanded that the decision on land ceiling be withdrawn.

As soon as Speaker Taranath Ranabhat started the meeting of the House of Representatives, Renu Yadav of RPP said that if the government was courageous enough it should impose ceiling on property.

Badrai Mandal of NSP echoed Yadav’s opinion and added that they would continue their protest until the government withdraws its decision pertaining to land ceiling.

Then RPP and NSP lawmakers stood in front of the Speaker’s seat and chanted slogans against the government’s decision. Speaker Ranabhat then adjourned the House until Monday.

Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba last week announced several reform programmes in economic and social fronts in parliament, one of which is imposition of new ceiling on land. For this purpose, Prime Minister Deuba restricted all works pertaining to buying and sale of land and transfer of ownership of land. It has drawn flak from RPP and NSP whereas other opposition parties have hailed the decision.

Meanwhile central leader of the Nepali Congress Sailaja Acharya also criticized the Prime Minister’s decision on land ceiling. In a statement issued on Saturday, former deputy Prime Minister said that it is the decision of the Prime Minister and Nepali Congress does not subscribe to it.

She said that Prime Minister Deuba took this decision without consulting in the party.

She has also requested Party President Girija Prasad Koirala to call a meeting of Nepali Congress central working committee to discuss land ceiling issue.
