Koirala pays tributes to martyrs

Kathmandu, Jan. 28 : Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala has said that he, who contributes to the strengthening of democracy and protection of the constitution attained through great sacrifices made by martyrs and helps promote national unity, while working for the country’s socio-economic development, pays the real tributes to martyrs.

In a message on the occasion of the Martyrs Day today, Prime Minister Koirala said as a result of the selfless sacrifices made by martyrs all the Nepalese have become sovereign citizens.

In the message, the Prime Minister has paid rich tributes to known and unknown martyrs who laid down their lives for the establishment of democracy in the country.

He hoped that the Martyrs Day would inspire all to show respect for the sacrifices made by martyrs and help one and all draw inspiration from such sacrifices.

The Prime Minister also urged all to unite for the country’s development as a tribute to martyrs.

Meanwhile, glowing tributes were paid to martyrs Ganga Lal and Dasharath Chand by placing garlands on a memorial at local Sobha Bhagawati this morning, a minute of silence was also observed in memory of the martyrs.

Ganga Lal and Dasharath Chand had attained martyrdom at Shobha Bhagawati.

Addressing the condolence meet organised by the Kathmandu Metropolitan City in commemoration of the martyrs week, Mayor Keshav Sthapit said that the pollution of the Bishnumati River which was once mixed with the sacred blood of the martyrs is disgusting.

He said at present the country is in need of brave sons like Ganga Lal and Dasharath Chand when corruption has crossed its limits.

From the chair, Deputy Mayor Bidur Mainali said that the martyrs will be ever remembered for the struggle and sacrifice they made for the sake of the country and people.

Prayag Raj Joshi, nephew of martyr Shukra Raj Shastri, said the martyrs laid down their lives for the establishment of human rights in the country.

Historian Bhuvan Lal Pradhan noted that only the people with deep reverence towards their country and society could understand the dreams of the martyrs.

He said the dreams of the martyrs had yet to materialise as selfish motive prevail all round.

Hari Krishna Shrestha, a friend of the martyrs, said that Ganga Lal was martyred at the young age of 22 years.
