Nepali Congress President Girija Prasad Koirala Friday expressed apprehensions that the recently imported weapons could give rise to a dictatorial regime in the country in the days ahead.

“As the army is not under the control of the parliament there are chances that the weapons imported for its use could be abused,” Koirala said while talking to newsmen at his residence in Biratnagar.

He claimed that the weapons in the country could be used for the right cause only by the army of the people. He said at a time when the countries that have sold the weapons have themselves expressed fear that the security personnel in Nepal could abuse the weapons and violate the human rights of common citizens, we cannot stay behind without suspecting the same.

The government recently imported 3,000 M-16 rifles from the US. It is also waiting to receive the 5,000 automatic rifles imported from Belgium.
