Koirala lauds role of mathematics in human life

Kathmandu, June 20: Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala has said that mathematics has significance at every moment of human life.

The Prime Minister was inaugurating a seminar on the problems and prospects of mathematics in Nepal and initiating the World Mathematics Day 2000 programme here today.

He also underlined the need for laying out a disciplined and civilised society by exploiting the philosophical side of mathematics.

It is laudable that the UN is marking the year 2000 as a year for mathematics, he said adding, awareness should be generated among the rural people about the usefulness of mathematics.

Nepal is to mark the year 2000 as a year for mathematics as per a call from the International Mathematics Association in association with UNESCO, and for this purpose a national level committee has been formed.

Minister for Education and Sports Amod Prasad Upadhyaya, from the chair, said that the world has witnessed a grand success in the field of science and technology and emphasised upon the advancement of mathematics even with the limited means and resources available for us.

Minister for Science and Technology Surendra Prasad Choudhari said that mathematics, which has made a greater contribution to civilisation in the east, is a basis for exploring the truth.

Vice-Chancellor of RONAST Dr. Dayananda Bajracharya noted that mathematics has a vital role in bio-technology as well as information technology.
