The president of major opposition Nepali Congress (NC) Girija Prasad Koirala has renewed the demand for the restoration of the House of Representatives as part of the greater agenda of safeguarding parliamentary democracy, human rights and the rule of law in the country.

Issuing a press statement on Monday, the NC President said, “Our party still considers that the revival of the House of Representatives a must if we are to defend democracy.” President Koirala has been kept under house arrest following the February political change in the country. “Party workers have to devote themselves to the ongoing movement aimed at the restoration of human rights and parliamentary democracy,” Koirala said.

Citing the current political situation, Koirala postponed NC’s 11th general convention slated for March 2-5 and extended the term of the Central Working Committee (CWC) until the next convention. Koirala’s call follows the decision made by a dozen CWC members available in Kathmandu last week.

The NC president, moreover, asked the district leaderships to hold district conventions before the next general convention. Over 50 districts have already conducted their district conventions, party sources said.
