Kathmandu, August 28: Temporary truce was announced in the ruling Nepali Congress party following the talks between Prime Minister and party president Girija Prasad Koirala and senior leader Krishna Prasad Bhattarai Sunday.
The crisis in the party was over as Koirala and Bhattarai agreed to reconstitute the cabinet and central working committee of the party giving due representation to the disgruntled faction of the party, postpone the scheduled annual convention of the party for two months and constitute an impartial committee to conduct elections of different levels of the party for the purpose of national convention.
However, the two main conditions put forth by Bhattarai for the resolution of the crisis in the party were brushed aside until the national convention of the party, said NC spokesman Narahari Achaarya.
Bhattarai had put forth five conditions for the resolution of the crisis in the party. They include reconstitution of central working committee of the party, reconstitution of the cabinet, postponement of party’s national convention for three months and resignation of Prime Minister and party president Koirala from one of the two posts.
Koirala agreed to fulfil Bhattarai’s three demands and refused to relinquish any of the two posts—party president or premiership.
Koirala has called an emergency meeting of the central working committee of the Nepali Congress Tuesday morning to get the Koirala-Bhattarai agreement endorsed by party’s apex body.
However, Koirala’s rival lawmakers and leaders are still not happy with the agreement between Koirala and Bhattarai.
Rival NC leaders and lawmakers are still holding meeting to work out a common strategy to be taken in Tuesday’s meeting of NC central working committee.
Rival lawmakers and even Bhattarai had threatened to move no-trust motion against Prime Minister Koirala if he did not agree to step down from either party presidency or premiership.
However, Koirala refused to give in to the pressure tactics.
The crisis in the party deepened following Koirala’s decision to drop central leader and senior Minister Khum Bahadur Khadka from the cabinet.
