Nepali Congress (NC) general secretary KB Gurung has said that King should remain as the head of state to safeguard the existence of the nation.
Addressing a gathering of party activists in Pokhara on Tuesday, Gurung said, “King as the head of state is necessary in protecting the existence of the nation. Realising this fact, president Koirala [Girija Prasad] talked about giving space to ceremonial monarch.”
“The country accepted a Rana prime minister in 2007 B.S to safeguard the national existence. The situation now is that the monarchy should be kept in for the same purpose,” he further said.
Political parties accepted ceremonial monarchy the day the House of Representatives passed a bill on the heir to the throne, he said.
Prime Minister Koirala had come under strong criticism from various sides including the allies of the SPA when he said that the King should be given space in democracy to avoid political conflict.
The NC general secretary also said that his party would not go for the republic. “The Nepali Congress is not a pro-republic party. The people’s movement was for democracy, not for a republic,” he argued asking the party cadres to be clear about the party policy.
