His Majesty King Gyanendra who is on an unofficial visit to the Eastern Region granted an audience to former Prime Minister and chairman of Rastriya Janashakti Party (RJP) Surya Bahadur Thapa in Dhankuta Saturday.

Thapa flew to Dhankuta, his hometown, by a chartered helicopter to ‘welcome’ the monarch who was there Saturday afternoon. Reports said the King granted Thapa a brief audience.

Although nothing has come out regarding what transpired between the monarch and the four-time Prime Minister during the one-to-one, the meeting is seen as a significant development particularly at a time when the distance between the parliamentary parties and the Narayanhity Palace is growing.

The RJP chief, whose views over the Feb 1 royal takeover have largely been guarded, has been advocating for reconciliation between the King and the parties.

A couple of days ago, he met Nepali Congress president Girija Prasad Koirala, who commands the seven-party alliance, and discussed the current political impasse and its possible outlet.
