His Majesty King Gyanendra today said that he hoped the Maoists – he described them only as ‘they’ – would ultimately come to the national mainstream if they cared for the nation and nationality.

Giving directions to newly appointed chairmen and vice-chairmen of District Development Committees of Karnali Zone this afternoon in Khalanga, Jumla district, the King said, “Now, we must not bow down to terrorism. If we move ahead with people’s participation, it [terrorism] will be uprooted.”
His Majesty further remarked, “If they [Maoists] at all believe in nationality, they will come to the national mainstream. Let’s wait and see.” The monarch also said in clear terms that the state would take every necessary step to stem terrorism.
The King instructed the DDC chairmen and vice-chairman of Karnali Zone to work as per the wishes of the people. “You have to focus on how the interest of the people can be best served. We know Karnali is a backward region and has also been convulsed by terrorism,” the King said.
Thousands of ordinary citizens thronged to Khalanga from different parts of Karnali region to welcome the monarch. His Majesty had curiously listened to the problems of the Karnali residents lined up on street for his welcome.
His Majesty also visited Surkhet district later in the afternoon. He is staying at the No. 4 Brigade of the Royal Nepalese Army in Surkhet, according to the state-owned Nepal Television.
After a whirlwind tour to the eastern region a couple of weeks ago, the King embarked on an unofficial tour to mid and far-western regions from Monday.
