Japanese MPs meet PM, Speaker; Koizumi supports peace process

The visiting delegation of the Japanese parliamentarians met with Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala and Speaker Subash Nemwang on Friday.

During the meeting with PM Koirala at latter’s residence in Baluwatar in the morning, the Japanese lawmakers expressed their commitments to support Nepal at this transitional period when efforts for establishment of permanent peace and solution of the Maoist problem are underway.

The Japanese delegation also reiterated the commitments to continue financial support to Nepal.

Similarly, the team also held discussion with the Speaker of the House of Representatives Subash Nemwang on the possible support Japan could extend in the peace process here.

The team of Japanese parliamentarians had arrived Nepal on Thursday for a three-day official visit coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The three-member team comprises Tadahiko Ito and Takashi Yano, members of the House of Representatives and Toshiki Nikai, personal secretary of Toshihiro Nikai who is the Chairman of the Japan-Nepal Parliamentarians Friendship League as well as Minister for Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan.

Meanwhile, issuing a statement on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the bilateral relations, Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi expressed commitment to Japanese support to Nepal’s efforts to establish peace and democracy.

“I would like to pay tribute to people’s zeal for democracy, and to support the efforts of the Government of Nepal aimed at bringing about permanent peace and prosperity to Nepal as early as possible,” he said.

He added, “It is my strong belief that the close and cordial relations between the two nations will be further promoted on the auspicious occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between Japan and Nepal.”
