Japan Wednesday gave Nepal a Rs.540.7 million grant as debt relief in lieu of repayment of interest for loans, the Finance Ministry said. Japan, Nepal’s largest aid donor, has been providing such debt relief since 1978.

The money will be used to purchase development goods. Wednesday’s grant is the third for the Japanese fiscal year 2002, the Finance Ministry said. Japan and Nepal exchanged notes confirming the grant.
