Kathmandu, 2 February: A strike by supporters of mayor Bajrang Prasad Shah of Janakpur municipality to protest his arrest went off peacefully Friday, a spokesman of the Home Ministry

said.

Police arrested Shah Thursday after he refused to testify to the district administration office

probing charges of widespread irregularities at the municipality. Several ward chairmen of the city also refused to testify. The protestors stoned the district office Thursday evening after his arrest. A court released Shah Friday on condition that he may not leave the city.
