Infuriated students of the Institute of Engineering set ablaze the chair of the campus chief Sunday demanding either the resignation of the chief or an apology in writing for letting police enter the campus premises, The Himalayan Times reported.
The police had entered the campus to disburse the students, who were waving black flags at Prime Minister Surya Bahadur Thapa. Thapa was the chief guest of a felicitation program organized by the campus.
The security personnel baton charged the students, who were shouting slogans against regression. The student union units of the Pulchowk campus issued a joint statement and condemned police intervention and action on students.
“The campus administration must take the responsibility for what happened today and the police shouldn’t be allowed to enter the campus in the future,” the press release read, the report said.
The seven student unions collected Rs.15471 from the locals as a donation for the medical expenses for the treatment of injured students. They also slammed the police for telling the shopkeeper not to donate money.
Meanwhile, a delegation of student leaders visited the Kathmandu University and the Ministry of Education and Sports to request for the early fulfillment of their educational demands.
“The Kathmandu University has agreed to provide free education to nine students from next academic year,” Gagan Kumar Thapa, the general secretary of Nepal Students Union said.
He added, “The University has also promised to form a monitoring committee including the student’s representative within a week and also to work on the necessary amendments in the University rules to allow establishment of free students union.”
Thapa also said that Ministry for Education and Sports has called the students on January 24 to discuss their demands.
