The International Music Day was celebrated in Kathmandu on June 21, 2006 with fanfare.

According to Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), a function was organized on the pavements and temple steps of Basantapur Durbar Square under the aegis of the Alliance francaise and B&N event management.

Various programmes were organized in Kathmandu to mark the day.

Started in France in 1982 as a day dedicated to music to promote musical practice and live music without any profit-making objective, the event is now celebrated in more than 250 cities of over 120 countries on this day every year.

It was introduced in Nepal by the Alliance francaise in 1994. The organizers at Alliance francaise say that it has since then grown more and become more popular.
