Saying monarchy and democracy can no longer go together in Nepal, intellectuals and professionals on Saturday urged the major opposition Nepali Congress (NC) party to revise its statute and remove “constitutional monarchy” from it.
In an interaction program organized by the party to discuss its policy and future programs on the eve of the upcoming general convention, intellectuals and professionals urged the party to set a roadmap so as to rescue the country from age-old problems.
According to them, the NC should learn lessons from past experiences and take an appropriate decision on monarchy in its upcoming general convention.
Multiparty democracy and constitutional monarchy are major principles of the country’s largest democratic party which is scheduled for its 11th general convention on August 30 -September 2 in the capital.
Saying the party’s upcoming General Convention should make a decision on the future and status of monarchy in Nepal, they reportedly said, “the NC will vanish from the country’s political landscape if it fails to do this.”
Lawyers, professors, doctors, engineers, teachers and journalists, among others had participated in the interaction program.
“The foundation of the party’s ideology is popular sovereignty. So, it must revise its principles to attain this basic goal,” said Professor Dr Lok Raj Baral, putting his suggestions. “NC has, once again, got a golden opportunity to prove itself a champion of democracy,” he said.
“The status quo mentality cannot help the party anymore,” he warned.
