Water Resources Minister of Bangladesh Hafiz Uddin Ahmed said Saturday India was trying to upset the regional peace by the introduction of its ambitious “river-linking project,” according to Nepal Samacharpatra.
“We have informed India about the troubles the project will create in the region,” the daily quoted Ahmed as saying at a press-interaction in Kathmandu.
Urging Nepal to work for regional cooperation, the Minister said,” The project also poses a threat to Nepal. So, it is better if we raise a joint voice against it.”
Minister Ahmed blamed India of trying to convert Bangladesh into a dry state through “river-linking project” leaving millions of people, the environment and economy at stake.
Ahmed, drawing India’s attention towards international laws, said, “As per the international law, it is vital to seek cooperation and permission from the neighboring countries for the management and distribution of water in the region.”
The minister who was in Nepal for lobbying against the Indian project stressed unity with Nepal. He said, “Working together with Nepal can help reduce such threats.”
He, however, expressed his hope that India will reconsider the project and work on mutual welfare for the good of people in the SAARC Region. nepalnews.com pd Jan 25
