India provides Rs 5 b to upgrade check posts on Nepal-India border

India has agreed to provide over NRs 5 billion for a project targeting to upgrade border check posts along the Nepal-India border within the coming three years.

The money will be used in development of infrastructure at the four check posts at Raxaul-Birgunj, Sunauli-Bhairahawa, Jogbani-Biratnagar and Nepalgunj Road-Nepalgunj, a statement issued by the Indian embassy here said.

According to the embassy, an MoU to this effect was signed today between Finance Secretary Bhanu Prasad Acharya and the Indian envoy Shiv Shankar Mukherjee.

The project for development of infrastructure at the check posts costing Rs 5059 million is expected to bring comfort and convenience to over 4,000 vehicles per day and innumerable number of people crossing the borders everyday for economic and social interaction, the statement said.

“The project will not only obviate problems related to traffic blockage, delay in customs checking, inconvenience to passengers, but also enhance greater interaction and encourage increased connectivity between the two friendly neighbors,” it added.

The Indian government is expected to spend over IRs.10 billion in setting up link roads on Indian side to the Nepal-India border, it said.

India’s commitment to economic cooperation with Nepal in three key sectors- education, health and infrastructure development- is steadfast and will further deepen and diversify in future, the statement added.
