KATHMANDU:  The local Indian authorities in Uttar Pradesh and Uttaranchal states have begun investigations into the bank accounts of Nepalis living there on the suspicion that they have links with the Maoists, published reports said Wednesday.

In the two Indian states, 2,000 bank accounts belonging to Nepalis have been frozen, the Himalayan Times said.

The daily, quoting unspecified sources, said accounts of Nepali citizens in State Bank of India, Bank of Badauda, Allahabad Bank, Punjab National Bank and Nainital District bank are being investigated. The move was initiated after the US imposed economic sanctions on the Maoists and urged other nations to follow suit, the daily said.

During his recent visit to India on behalf of SAARC chairman, Prime Minister Surya Bahadur Thapa had requested the Indian President and PM to help Nepal control terrorist activities, the daily said, quoting sources.
