India has pledged to speed up customs modernization projects at vital border points in Nepal and also asked Nepal to cut down the number of its ‘choti bhansar’ of small customs points.

The choti bhansar are the safest routes for illicit and unauthorized trade between Nepal and India.

The two day long meeting between the director generals of the customs and revenue investigation departments of both the countries discussed the ways to modernize customs and check illegal trade between the countries, according to reports.

The two sides agreed to share more information to check unauthorized trade along and via the 1,800 km open border between Nepal and India.

According to reports, the Nepali side assured the Indian side that it will look into the demand of reducing the choti bhansar as per the recommendation made by the Customs Improvement Recommendation Commission a few years ago.

Director general of the customs department Bal Govinda Bista is leading the Nepali delegation, while the Indian delegation was led by Department of Revenue Investigation A P Kala.
