Kathmandu, Jan. 28: The newly elected president of the Nepali Congress party, Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, said that he has felt the younger generation of the party have become capable of taking over the leadership of the party.

Speaking at a function of giving away certificates to the newly elected members of the party’s Central Working Committee in Kathmandu today, he lauded the party workers for being highly responsible during the party’s 10th General Convention in Pokhara.

“The attitude shown by the party workers has consolidated the party,” the Prime Minister said and added that it now is the responsibility of the party’s leadership to reflect and maintain their message of unity and for that a balance should be maintained between the party and the government.

The formal announcement of the election results to the 18 seats of the party’s CWC was also made today.

At the function, Mukunda Regmi, coordinator of the election committee presented certificate to the newly-elected president of the party. Regmi also gave away certificates to the 13 out of the 18 elected members of the CWC. According to the party statute amended by the 10th General Convention, half of the 36 members of the CWC are nominated by the party president.

Nominating Bhattarai, Koirala said that Kishnuji was one of the founding members of the Nepali Congress and his nomination to the party’s CWC is only a formality. Koirala also said he would also announce the nomination of Sher Bahadur Deuba to the CWC soon.

After his nomination, Bhattarai said that he has felt quite relaxed after the party’s General Convention and added that the successful completion of the General Convention has proved wrong all those who have been saying that the party would break up.

“The credit for this goes to Party president Koirala,” Bhattarai said and added that the differences and the bitterness within the party will gradually subside.

Bhattarai also said that the leaders and workers of the Nepali Congress should now share the burden of the party. “For that, unity in the party is imperative.” He also said the new leadership of the party and the government should bring out new programmes to revitalise the economy.

Presiding over the function, Party President and Prime Minister Koirala said that everybody was watching the Convention with scepticism on whether the party would break up. But, he said, he was sure that such a situation would never arise because he had complete faith on the workers of the Nepali Congress.

He said if the Nepali Congress party goes ahead in a united manner it can resolve all the problems of the country.

At the function, coordinator of the election committee said he was glad to have successfully completed the job that party had assigned to him.
