House team leaves for New York

KATHMANDU, Aug 27 – Speaker of the House of Representatives Taranath Ranabhat and Chairman of National Assembly Dr Mohammad Mohsin today left for New York to take part in the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) Summit slated for 30th August-1st September.

The Speaker of the Lower House and the Chairman of the Upper House of the Parliament will participate in the “Summit of Presiding Officers of the Parliaments of World” that aims to suggest means to strengthen relations between United Nations (UN) and IPU.

Dr Ishwor Prasad Upadhyay, General Secretary of the Parliament and Dr Surya Kiran Gurung, Secretary at the House of Representatives complete the four-member team.

“We are going to discuss the need for greater IPU role in UN activities,” said Speaker Ranabhat at the Tribhuvan International Airport. “Besides, we will also try to meet the members of Nepali community in the US and discuss how to promote Nepal’s interests in that country.”

“We will also interact with those Congressmen – both Senators and Representatives – to find means for greater economic aid for Nepal,” said Chairman Mohasin.

Mohasin added that IPU would try to activate the second track of diplomacy, “the first being the UN”, to discuss the problems and issues facing the world.

Mohasin also said that a draft declaration, “IPU’s Vision for the 3rd Millennium” will be passed and submitted to the Millennium Summit for consideration.

Gurung said that the delegation would observe the proceedings of the US Senate and the House of Representatives on 5th and 6th of September in Washington D C respectively.

The three-day UN Millennium Summit begins on 6th September which the heads of States and governments are scheduled to address.
