The session of the legislative parliament – which had remained stalled since the past one and half months – has been postponed once again, on Thursday, without even convening.
After the Madhesi parliamentarians remained firm in their stance of not allowing today’s proceeding of the parliament set to start at 11 am, Speaker Subash Nemwang has, by issuing a notice, postponed the house proceeding until Saturday, May 26.
Madhesi MP Uma Kant Chaudhari said they won’t allow the parliamentary session to convene until the government and the eight parties are not serious towards the legitimate demands of Madhes.
According to him, if Prime Minister Koirala himself addresses the demands of Madhes then the parliamentary session can resume.
Madhesi MPs have been demanding fresh census and fresh delimitation of constituencies based on new census. They have also demanded high level commission to probe atrocities during Madhes agitation.
PM Koirala and Speaker Subash Nemwang held discussions earlier in the morning on resuming the stalled parliamentary session.
According to reports, in the meeting which took place at PM Koirala’s Baluwatar residence, the PM said government is positive towards the demands raised by different groups and is ready to constitute Constituency Delimitation Commission and hold judicial inquiry to probe losses of lives and properties during the Madhesi movement. He had reportedly asked the Speaker to relay this message to the agitating Madhesi parliamentarians.
Immediately afterwards, Speaker Nemwang had held a meeting with Madhesi leaders, but it bore no result as the latter said that they won’t allow the parliament to convene until PM Koirala address their demands.
