The Valley Traffic Police Office (VTPO) has said the rule for wearing helmets by motorcycle pillion riders will not be compulsory anymore.
The VTPO said this in a notice Thursday, scrapping the four-year old rule. It will be an individual choice of pillion riders whether or not to wear helmets.
Talking to Nepalnews, an official at the VTPO said the decision was taken owing to complaints that the rule often created practical problems.
“There had been complaints that it is impractical, for various reasons, to make pillion riders wear helmets. Bikers have to carry extra helmet, which many a times is not practical. The rule didn’t bring about much change in the situation now and then,” he explained.
