The visiting UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres has said that there is a need to re-establish security posts in refugee camps.
Replying to queries regarding tensions among refugees over issue of resettlement, Guterres said that the security situation should be strengthened. There used to be security posts within camps in the past but were subsequently withdrawn.
Addressing a press briefing in the capital on Wednesday, Guterres said voluntary repatriation is the “desirable solution” for the refugee impasse. Saying that positive views were coming from India (on refugee resolution), he said UNHCR hopes for constructive attitude from Nepal, India and Bhutan on this issue.
Guterres, who is leaving for Bhutan on Thursday, said the resettlement should be based on the will of the people.
In response to reports that Bhutan government may be planning to evict additional 80,000 Nepali-speaking citizens, Guterres said “there will not be such a tragedy.”
Guterres has met with PM Koirala, Foreign Minister Sahana Pradhan and Home Minister Krishna Sitaula during his visit.
