Soldier Rifleman Khagendra Gurung, who is currently serving with 1st Battalion of the Royal Gurkha Rifles in Brunei, won the Parish Memorial Trophy.

The trophy, established in memory of Captain Parish in 1974, is presented to the Rifleman who has made the greatest contribution in upholding the name and reputation of the Battalion over the year.

Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Tim StJ Warrington presented the trophy during a parade in front of the whole Battalion.

Company Commander Capt Jitbahadur Ghati who nominated Khagendra for the award, said “Khangendra is an exceptional soldier, his fitness is outstanding and whilst operating in the jungle, he demonstrates good basic skills and drills in the true tradition of the Gurkha soldier.”

Khagendra has been a Gurkha Rifleman for fours years and has served in Bosnia, Kosovo and the Ivory Coast where he helped to evacuate hundreds of civilians from the strife-torn country during 2004.

“My father taught me all about the military; the need to be well disciplined, fit and above all loyal,” said Khagendra, adding, “When the Commanding Officer called my name out to be presented with the trophy, I felt very happy and extremely proud. I always try to do my best for my company and the Battalion.”
