KATHMANDU:  Minister for Information and Communications Ramesh Nath Pandey responding to the offer for peace talks made by the Maoists rebels through the media Wednesday said the government was seriously studying the legality and reliability of the statement.

Pandey told the national news agency that the government would take appropriate steps regarding the Maoist peace bid after verifying the statement issued by CPN (Maoist) President Pushpa Kamal Dahal alias Prachanda.

He made it clear that the government had been reiterating the need to address the problems related with the insurgency through the holding of peaceful dialogue.

The major dailies published from the capital carried a news item Wednesday based on a press release issued after the politburo meeting of the Maoists. The Maoists called upon the government to come forward for peace talks besides renewing their pledge not to mow down political activists and to put an end to the spate of attacks on development infrastructure.
