Minister for Land Reforms and Management, Prabhu Narayan Chaudhari, has said that the government will take action against anybody keeping land over the ceiling.
Speaking at a face to face programme in the capital on Sunday, he said that the government is committed to seize the king’s land exceeding the legal ceiling and distribute it to the landless, according to reports.
“Nobody is above law now. Be it king, landlord or anybody, the government can take action against anybody,” he added.
According to the prevalent law, one can possess as much as 25 ropanis of land in the Kathmandu valley.
According to a preliminary report, the King and his kin own over 34,000 ropanis of land.
Chaudhari said a new regulation on limitation of land owned in the valley is being drafted.
Speaking at the same programme, leader of Nepali Congress Binaya Dhwaj Chanda said that the king should not be allowed to own property.
UML MP Prakash Jwala said that the King’s property must be immediately nationalised.
The reinstated parliament, in a bid to drastically cutting the royal privileges, made the royal property taxable.
