Deputy Prime Minister Badri Prasad Mandal said Monday that the government was prepared to hold  elections by April next year if all the political parties forged the needed consensus.

Speaking at a programme in Birgunj, Mandal said democracy was facing threats from those who were spreading wrong messages of a republic at a time when His Majesty the King has been showing his commitment to constitutional monarchy and multiparty democracy.

“The government is studying the authenticity of the proposal for peace talks put forward by the Maoists recently,” he said.  He said the government is ready for talks with the Maoists if they come forward honestly.
