Home Minister Kamal Thapa has said that the government is committed to hold the upcoming municipal polls in a free and fair manner.
Addressing a mass meeting organised by the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), town-working committee, Birgunj on Saturday, Minister Thapa said, “As election is the backbone and foundation of democracy, all those having faith in democracy should help make the upcoming election successful,” according to reports.
Stating that right to vote is the inherent and constitutional right of Nepalis, he warned that any effort made to deprive people from these rights will be dealt with as per the law.
He urged all the voters to exercise their voting rights without any fear and hesitation, as the government has made a high level of security arrangement for the elections, the report adds.
Minister Thapa said that the Election Commission and the government have already completed all necessary preparations for the election.
“The government is always ready to hold dialogue, consensus and understanding with the parties for establishing lasting peace and consolidating democracy in the country,” Minister Thapa said.
The seven political parties have announced to actively boycott the polls.
Speaking at the same programme, Central Member and Assistant Minister for Education and Sports, Bhuvan Pathak, said that the success of the municipal elections will add pressure on the Maoists to joint the political mainstream and pave the way to elections for the parliament.
He also added that the decision to hand over the rights to take part in elections to the district working committees brings to light the inefficiency of the RPP leadership.
Central working committee meeting of the RPP that concluded on Friday let the district committees to decide whether to take part in the election or not after it failed to make consensus in this regard.
